Airogym - For Blood Clots & DVTBetter CirculationCirculation matters, whether you are young or old, fit or unfit. This is because if you are immobile for long periods of time your blood flow decreases and your blood thickens. This can put you at risk of developing a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which can form in the leg and can become life threatening if the clot embolises (breaks away) and reaches vital organs such as the lungs. Increase CirculationThe Airogym™ is a pocket-sized inflatable exercise cushion that is designed to increase blood flow through the veins in the leg. Originally invented by a retired senior long haul captain to help prevent DVTs developing as a result of plane journeys of 4+ hours, Airogym™ can help boost circulation in many different situations. It is endorsed by world-leading consultant vascular surgeon John Scurr and it has previously won a Sunday Telegraph Best Tested Product Award with a five star rating. The resistance-based exercise which Airogym™ delivers is the key to its effectiveness at boosting circulation and promoting the flow of blood through the deep veins. By pressing down on the footpad, veins in the foot are compressed, squeezing blood into the main veins in the calf. The pressure involved in squeezing the foot causes muscular contraction of the calf muscle, promoting the flow of blood through the main veins. These active exercises are responsible for pumping fluid from the legs and may also reduce or prevent ankle swelling. The more air put into the exerciser the harder the work out, and vice versa, therefore it can be adapted to suit individual needs. When to use AirogymTravel: Any journey that is longer than four hours - whether it is by plane, train, boat or coach - where a traveller is relatively immobile produces a risk of DVT. Although the risk increases with age, nobody is immune. The action of pushing your feet up and down against the resistance of an inflated Airogym™ exerciser is designed to help improve circulation if you are not able to walk around regularly. Twisting the ankles or performing stretches in your seat may provide momentary relief from outward discomfort during a flight but these are not enough to cause major muscle contraction and will have very little effect on actual blood flow. Airogym™ is compact (160mm x 160mm when folded) and light weight (65g) so it can be easily carried in a pocket, handbag or other hand luggage and used in most seated circumstances. Elderly/Immobile: Airogym™ may also be helpful for anyone who is unable to exercise as much as they used to or would like. It is simple to use, gives no discomfort and can be operated at home or wherever is convenient. The exercise is extremely gentle and the more air you put into the Airogym™, the more strenuous the workout becomes, so it can be tailored to individual ability and circumstances. It may also help to reduce swollen joints and muscles. Pregnancy: The use of an Airogym™ (especially when used lying down and pushing against a wall or the end of the bed) during pregnancy may help to relieve painful swollen ankles and legs. It may also help to reduce the risk of the formation of a DVT which is heightened during pregnancy when the blood clots more easily and tiredness and additional weight contribute to reduced levels of exercise. Deskbound: When you sit behind a desk without exercising for long periods of time your blood flow decreases and your blood thickens and so puts you at risk of e-thrombosis. If you can’t take very regular breaks to walk around whilst at work, Airogym™ can be used to help exercise your legs without distracting you or your colleagues from what you are doing. Physiotherapy/Post-Operative Care: Airogym™ can be used in a whole range of scenarios by physiotherapists but especially:-
After a physiotherapy appointment, the patient can take the Airogym™ home with them so that they can continue with the exercises. This helps to speed recovery and gives the patient something that they can control and contribute to their own recovery. Diabetes: Poor circulation is one of the most dangerous consequences of diabetes so one of the best things a diabetic patient can therefore do for themselves is to stay active. A regular exercise program will also help stabilise blood sugar, reduce the need for insulin and medication and keep weight under control. However, diabetics often have other health problems such as high blood pressure or nerve damage in the feet which may make them less able to exercise. In these circumstances, using an Airogym™ regularly could help to boost circulation. Dialysis: In studies1, exercising during dialysis has been shown to actually improve the effectiveness of treatment. The Airogym™ may therefore be useful for a number of reasons:-
Airogym DimensionsWhen folded neatly the Airogym™ measures approximately 160mm x 160mm and comes in a clear, sealed poly bag. Fully expanded its dimensions are 470mm x 160mm and when inflated it is approx. 70mm high. It weighs 65g. Exercises
