Hayfever (‘seasonal allergic rhinitis’) affects over 20% of the UK population. It is caused mostly by an allergy to grass, tree or hay pollens, which affects the nose, sinus, throat and eyes, however an increasing problem is all-year-round symptoms from unidentified allergies (allergic rhinitis ). Hayfever usually occurs during the spring and summer months, but depends on which pollens are to blame. From May to July grass (most common cause in UK) and flower pollen are the most common cause of hayfever whereas, during spring, from March to May, tree pollens are the most common. Hayfever in the autumn months tends to be caused by weeds such as nettles and docks, late flowering plants, and mould spores. Hayfever symptoms can be similar to a cold, and include a runny nose, watery eyes and repeated sneezing attacks. Hayfever is associated with a family history of asthma or eczema and usually begins in the early teens. Hayfever symptoms may vary from year to year, depending on the weather conditions and pollen count. Increasingly people are experiencing symptoms for more of the year and indeed allergic rhinitis is becoming a year-round problem. How does the ‘Qu-Chi band’ work? Acupuncture is the art whereby pains and ailments in the body are helped by the careful and relatively painless insertion of very fine needles. It is a system of restoring and preserving health. The idea behind Acupressure is exactly the same, but instead of inserting fine needles, pressure is applied to specific acupuncture points. It has been practice for over 7000 years and is believed to have originated in the far-east and china. The human body comprises many tissues and organs, but in order for them to function correctly and efficiently they require an energy supply. It is this energy supply or 'CHI' that acupuncture/ acupressure manipulates, thereby helping the body to function better and heal itself. The specific point used by the ‘Qu-Chi band’ (LI-11 point known as ‘quchi’) lies at the outer elbow, on an energy line (‘meridian’) that runs from the nose to the hand. It pulls energy away from the upper body and the head. It has specific activity in the area around the nose and eyes. By reducing the energy in the face the build up of energy in that area is reduced and so excess symptoms are relieved. The effect of the ‘Qu-Chi’ band is relatively quick and symptom relief should be noticed soon after putting it on.
