The Lunette™ menstrual cup is an innovative menstrual barrier made in Finland. It is an easy-to-use, safe and sanitary alternative to disposable sanitary napkins and tampons. By using the menstrual cup, you protect the environment, save money and can enjoy peace of mind.

Lunette cup is:

  • Made in Finland of medical-grade silicone.
  • Hypoallergic, latex-free, odourless and safe.
  • Economic and ecologically-friendly; used with care, one Lunette™ menstrual cup lasts for several years
  • A sanitary and healthy alternative to disposable tampons and sanitary napkins.
  • Easy-to-use and comfortable, needs emptying approximately only 2-4 times a day. Can be used during the night.
  • The lining of the cup is totally smooth and the tab is flat, so cleaning is extremely easy. Measuring lines outside the cup (5 ml and 13.5 ml in size 1, 7.5 ml and 15 ml in size 2), for monitoring the amount of your flow
  • Can be cleaned between periods by placing in boiling water for 5 minutes
  • Can be used by women of all ages
  • Can be used before first sexual intercourse and also with an IUD and contraceptive ring. It may be helpful to discuss using Lunette together with an IUD with your doctor.
  • Not to be used during post-natal bleeding due to the risk of inflammation.
  • Does not disrupt the natural lubricating ability of the vagina, nor does it dry the vaginal mucus membrane
  • No dampness; no outbreaks of vaginal candidiasis, cystitis nor toxic shock syndrome have been linked to the use of menstrual cups.
  • Can be worn during sports.

The cup is inserted in the vagina where it is kept in place by a vacuum and the vaginal muscles. On average you will need to empty the cup 2-4 times per 24 hours. After emptying, wash the cup carefully with Lunette washing liquid and water. Alternatively you can boil the cup briefly in plenty of water.

The Lunette™ menstrual model 1:

Is recommended for women with light flow or who have never had sexual intercourse. The diameter is 41 mm (1.6 inches) by 47 mm (1.9 inches). The stem measures 25 mm (1 inch). The volume of the cup is 25 ml (0.85 fl oz).

The Lunette™ menstrual model 2:

Is recommended for women who have a heavier flow. The diameter is 46 mm (1.8 inches)  by 52 mm (2 inches). The stem measures 20 mm (0.8 inches). The volume of the cup is 30 ml (1.0 fl oz).

Side 1 is made from softer silicone than size 2.

Which cup size should I choose?

Most cup manufacturers give a certain age as the defining factor when choosing the right size. However, choosing your cup isn't always that simple, since there are other matters to consider. There are many 14-year-old virgins using the bigger Lunette, and we also know middle-aged women who love the smaller Lunette. Most women can use either cup, but one of them might be more comfortable in use.

Factors you should consider:

1. The amount of flow. We have noticed that this is the most important factor when choosing the right cup. As a general rule we can say that the bigger cup is best for heavier flow and smaller cup for lighter flow.

2. Anatomy. Each woman's anatomy is different and because of this we sometimes recommend the smaller Lunette cup also for heavier flow and vice versa. These kind of factors are:

Age. The smaller Lunette cup was originally designed for younger women to use as their first cup. Young women usually have tighter vaginal muscles, and inserting the smaller cup might be easier. The muscles lose elasticity with age and many women transfer to the bigger cup at some point in their life. There can be also hormonal changes, caused by e.g. pregnancy. These changes can affect the amount of menstrual flow quite radically, making one cup better for you than the other. As a rule of  thumb we can say that the Lunette size 2 is suitable for most adult women.

Virginity. We recommend the smaller Lunette cup to be used before first sexual intercourse, even if you have heavy periods. Because your muscles and hymen are most likely quite tight, it is easier to insert the smaller Lunette.

Pregnancy. If you have been pregnant, we recommend the Lunette cup size 2, because the shape of vagina changes during pregnancy. Hormones change your vaginal mucles and the hip bone structure.

Location of your cervix. With a thoroughly washed finger you can try if you can reach your cervix during menstruation. If your cervix sits very low, it is better to choose the smaller Lunette, since it is shorter and most likely fits better inside your vagina.

Active sports, e.g. yoga or pilates. Sports that strengthen the core muscles extensively, also work on pelvic floor muscles. Many women who actively and regularly do these sports have very strong vaginal muscles also later in their life. In this case you might want to consider the Lunette size 1.

Sensitive bladder. If you have an extremely sensitive bladder, the softer size 1 might be better for you. Remember that most women cannot feel the cup at all, whichever size they choose.

From the table below you can check which cup we recommend primarily. If you are unsure about which size to choose, don't hesitate to contact us!

Krisia :
I have been using the Lunette cup for almost a year now, and my only regret is that I went 20 years without it! I encourage all women to get a cup. I never knew my period could be so hassle-free! No tampons. No pads. No leaks. No stress. I put it in the day before I expect my period (just in case), and use it until the day after. Horseback riding, swimming, pilates, or just lying around the house.
