Mooncup Menstrual Cup

What Is It?

The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup, around two inches long and made from soft medical grade silicone. It is worn internally a lot lower than a tampon but, while tampons and pads absorb menstrual fluid, the Mooncup collects it. This means it doesn’t cause dryness or irritation, and also that it collects far more (three times as much as a ‘super-absorbent’ tampon’!). Because the Mooncup is reusable, you only need one so it saves you money and helps the environment, too.

The Mooncup is designed to be folded and inserted into the vagina, then removed, rinsed and reinserted up to every 8 hours. A light seal is formed with your vaginal walls, allowing menstrual fluid to pass into the Mooncup without leakage or odour. This seal is released for removal, allowing you to empty the contents, rinse or wipe and reinsert. Comfortable, convenient and safe: the Mooncup can be used overnight and when travelling, swimming or exercising.

What Size Mooncup is Right for Me?

The Mooncup and MCUK are available in two sizes:‘A’ and ‘B’. Size A measures 46mm in diameter and 50mm in length. Size B measures 43 mm in diameter and 50mm in length. Both sizes have a pull stem 21mm long, which you can trim to the length that is right for you.

Sizing is based on pelvic floor tone, not menstrual flow, and it’s important to get the sizing right to get the best from your Mooncup or MCUK. Pelvic floor tone will vary according to your age, childbearing history and what sort of exercise you do. Corrective surgery to the vagina will also have implications. Check the guidelines to see which size you need:

Size A

Because vaginal and pelvic floor tones naturally reduce with age, the size ‘A’ is recommended for women aged 30 or over. The difference between the ‘A’ and the ‘B’ is only small (3mm), but it is crucial!

Size ‘A’ is also recommended for all women who have given birth vaginally, regardless of age.

Size B

Designed for young girls and women under the age of 30 who have not given birth vaginally. It may also be suitable for women over the age of 30 who have had corrective surgery to the vagina, or who are advanced in tone-maintaining activities such as yoga, dance or pilates.

If you’re unsure of what size you need, please contact our Advice Centre.

Eco-friendly

One woman will on average use over 11,000 disposable sanitary products in a lifetime. The Mooncup is reusable and offers a simple way to dramatically reduce the amount of waste you produce.

  • 22 tampons or towels are used, on average, each period

  • In the UK alone, 4.3 billion disposable sanitary products are used every year

  • Their packaging, applicators and backing-strips will end up in landfill or in the sea.

Mooncup is the first sanitary protection manufacturer in the world to be awarded Ethical Business status for its people and enviromentally-friendly practices.

Healthier

The Mooncup is made from soft medical grade silicone and is latex-free, hypoallergenic and contains no dyes, BPA, phthalates, plastic, bleaches or toxins.

Because the Mooncup is non-absorbent, it will not cause dryness and does not disrupt your body’s natural pH levels (35% of the fluid tampons absorb is natural moisture!).

The Mooncup has measurement markings, enabling women to accurately report menstrual blood loss to a doctor or gynaecologist.

The Mooncup does not contain any absorbency gels, additives or perfumes. Unlike some conventional cotton sanitary products, it is also free from pesticides and GM materials.

Tampons can cause dryness and leave fibres behind. The Mooncup is designed to respect your natural balance.

The Mooncup is produced to ISO 13485:2003: a regulated quality management system specifically requiring that the service provided by an organisation “consistently meet[s] customer and regulatory requirements applicable to medical devices and related services”. From ISO online

Convenient

The Mooncup holds at least three times as much fluid as the most super-absorbent tampon, giving longer lasting protection on heavier days. And, because it is non-absorbent, it won’t cause dryness when your period is light.

Because there is no string, the Mooncup is completely discreet – and you only need one so there’s no need to carry bulky spares or worry about disposal of used products or packaging.

Cheaper

One Mooncup lasts for years, and costs the same as the average woman will spend on disposable sanitary protection in three months.

Insertion

The Mooncup is folded for insertion...

Removal

We recommend you empty your Mooncup every 4-8 hours. As with tampons, it’s important to have clean hands when removing and inserting the Mooncup. Then simply rinse your Mooncup and reinsert.

For more information, please see the FAQ section, or contact our Advice Centre. Please always read the Usage Guide thoroughly before using your Mooncup for the first time.

Whether you want to reduce your carbon footprint, save money or just look after your health, there are many reasons to choose the Mooncup.

i love my mooncup. i was worried that since i'm young and a virgin that it may be painful to remove but its fine after a couple of uses. you feel clean and confident when wearing it since it lasts much longer then pads and tampons do, no more embarressing leaks :) only problem is the sound effects when removing it but thats made up by its comfort, you really do forget its there. amazing product.

I would far rather give birth again than go through using the moon cup. Hated it. It would be far better if it had a small loop at the bottom to improve removal.

I love my mooncup ... lighter, shorter periods than I've ever had before. So comfortable to use and so easy. Can't understand now why anyone still uses disposable pads & tampons.

My entire experience of periods is so much more comfortable since I started using a Mooncup a couple of years ago. I certainly don't miss the horrible over-drying effects of tampons and would never EVER go back to using them after getting used to the ease of use of the Mooncup!

I have just used product for first time and it is great, wish I had decovered it years ago. It is really confortable, and I can't remember ever feeling this fresh and confident when having my period. I will definettly be recomending it to friends. Also no towels in the bathroom bin, and can feel good about not adding more rubbish to landfill. Full marks all round.

This is a great product. I had worried that it might leak or be messy, but even on the heaviest days it gives me total confidence. There is a knack to inserting and removing it, but once you've mastered that you'll never want to use tampons again.

I have been using the mooncup for about 18 months and I bleed very heavily. The cup does leak a bit. I wear a panty liner. If I am at a public loo I usually take a bottle of water along to rinse the cup. Great for camping! Or visiting! Or outdoors.

Great if you have a washbasin in same room as loo! Less convenient otherwise. I ended up cutting off the whole stem (it was useless anyway). Found it hard to get out until I got the knack of consciously relaxing & bearing down.

Brilliant, have used mooncup for three months and wished I had discovered this excellent product sooner. As a lifelong sufferer of thrush believe the mooncup a safer option than traditional tampons.

The best thing is not needing to smuggle tampons into the ladies loo at work! I'm lucky that I have access to a 'disabled' cubicle that has its own sink, which means rinsing out during the day is easy too. No dryness, a clear environmental conscience. 5*

It's so easy to use, I can still feel it and am aware of it more than a tampon which is why I gave it a 4. But certainly worth it and it's so much cleaner.

SO convenient! Unlike tampons can be worn preemptively so no 'have I started?' panics. I was always an applicator tampon girl but after a few tries adapted totally to using the mooncup. Can't praise it enough!

The Mooncup is awful!!! How can you boil it in a pan for 5 minutes to clean it? It is difficult to use and unhygienic, you have to use your hands!

jury is still out for me on this one..... I might just be extra sensetive, but I followed the instructions - I can feel it and it is quite painful - may just be a matter of getting used to it after years of tampons ..... will have to wait and see.

My friends kept recommending the Mooncup but I was VERY sceptical about trying it but I love it! It's so easy to use and I love the fact that it is healthier and more environmentally friendly than tampons. I would definately recommend this product.
