Description

You may already be basking in the wonders of a wool Baavet but did you know you can also get even more benefits from wool by sleeping on top of it as well as under it.

Now my old granny would always give us a wool blanket under the bottom sheet in winter to keep us warmer. But if we had had a Baavet wool mattress topper it could have stayed on top of the mattress all year round to keep us warm in winter and cool in summer.

This pure British wool duvet is graded in Halifax, cleaned in Dewsbury, and then carded and quilted in Huddersfield in the heart of Yorkshire, the traditional home of the British woollen industry. It's then made into individual woollen duvets in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales.

What’s So Good About Wool and a wool bedding?

The following science bit is freely available on the web and there’s the odd Baavet bit of info here as well!

For thousands of years mankind has understood the qualities and benefits of wool. We just seem to have forgotten about it in the last few decades, perhaps it’s time to take another look. After all wool is a completely natural fibre.

WOOL is the worlds most breathable fibre and can absorb 30% of its own weight in moisture before it transfers that moisture and heat.

How is wool different to down, feathers or polyester?

These are all insulators, they make the body hot and don't release heat, which is fine when you first get into bed. But then during the night our body temperature should drop as we go into deep sleep but these insulators bring our body temperature up so we either fully wake up or toss and turn to cool off. Then we go to sleep again and repeat the process of getting hot. This is not natural sleep and it prevents essential deep sleep which is necessary for cell regeneration and to help the body fight illness.

Wool is a heat regulator.

Wool is actually a regulator, not an insulator, it regulates your body temperature the same way as it does on the sheep. When it is too hot the wool passes the heat mainly in the form of moisture from the sheep's body out and when its cold its keeps the heat in. All wool products can do this but the more you process the wool, i.e. spin and weave it, then the less the wool can regulate heat. So we keep the wool in the same state as it is on the sheep. But the amazing thing about wool is that it will actually regulate the temperatures of 2 different people in the same bed.

So how does it do it?

Every fibre is covered with little cuticles, these are little hooks which allow us to spin and weave wool. It also makes wool felt. It's these hooks which dust mites hate. But just like a pine cone on a tree these cuticles open and close according to humidity and temperature. But they open and close much faster than pine cones. they react as soon as a body, be it sheep or human comes into contact with it, thereby regulating the the body temperature. But just like a pine cone which continues to open and close even when it's not on the tree so the wool cuticles continue to open and close as long as you don't chemically treat it or bleach it. This will only scorch the cuticles from the fibres thereby reducing the wools ability to regulate. It really becomes an insulator and only keeps you warm.

A Wool mattress topper is…naturally hypoallergenic.

It’s resistant to mould growth, and it inhibits dust mites which cause most of the allergic reactions.. A synthetic mattress topper and feather/down duvet retains your body moisture and you sweat into the duvet encouraging dust mites and mould. They can be home to more than 20,000 dust mites and their droppings, so a Baavet is ideal if you suffer from asthma or allergies. This also means that feather and synthetic duvets need regular washing.

A Woollen mattress topper is…naturally breathable. It transports moisture away from your skin, allowing you to sleep more comfortably.

Wool is… naturally fire resistant you don't have to add chemical retardants.

Wool is…100% sustainable. Every year a sheep naturally grows a fleece to keep it warm in the winter. There are over 4 million sheep in Wales alone. (So think of wool as a by product of the sheep hairdressing industry, or should that be baarbers….?)

Wool is…100% biodegradable. Technically you could put a Baavet into your composter and it would break down quite naturally into organic matter. Not that you will ever want to do that, obviously.

A Baavet is…100% natural woollen mattress topper. We don’t add any chemicals to our wool or change its consistency in any way. Did you know that to make wool fully machine washable and able to withstand a tumble dryer every fibre has to be stripped with chlorine which diminishes its natural properties. You will be glad to know we don’t do this to our wool.

Baavets just come straight from EWE to YOU - (with a bit of washing and carding and quilting in- between)

A Baavet…has a small carbon footprint, it hasn't had to travel half way round the world to be manufactured, then round the other half to get back to you. It’s a British product, made in Britain.
